Process-integrated monitoring in the can manufacturing

Over 400 billion cans are manufactured in the world each year and are used in the food industry or, for example, for aerosols or paint. But since the discovery of how to preserve foods using cans, it has never been possible to guarantee 100% consistent quality of the metal packaging. Many different testing procedures have proven to be too expensive and not very practicable, in economic terms.

Using process-integrated monitoring - i.e. right at the point where the individual components comprising the can are being created - it is possible to nip the problem in the bud. Cracks in the rivet head, double thickness sheet metal, faulty rejects or defects due to small cracks are identified as they occur.

The advantage is self-evident: whereas before the checks were only made after the can manufacturing process was completed, now processintegrated monitoring offers smooth manufacturing operations from the raw material through to the end-product.

The quality which the buyer demands is guaranteed under process-integrated monitoring, using force sensors positioned either directly on the tool or on the machine, depending on the application. If these sensors signal a deviation of the individually defined process patterns, then either the faulty parts are sorted out or production is immediately stopped.

The Dr.-Ing. K. Brankamp GmbH as the specialist of process automation is presenting this concept of realtime measuring and process monitoring. The company is offering a range of new monitoring systems which are already being used successfully at well-known can makers (e.g. Impress, Crown Cork & Seal, Cebal).

Experience to date confirms that the high expectations placed in this method are being satisfied.

Brankamp provides a good range of new monitoring systems for the metal packaging industry in monitoring the manufacture of covers, tins and tubes. All units are user friendly with excellent results.
